This morning my Queen asked me to read a chapter out of a book she was currently reading by John Bevere called “Thus Saith The Lord“. It is an older book of John’s (from 1999) but relevant today.

This book is a book about prophesy and more directly prophets that prophesy in our day and age. As a Pentecostal, I have been exposed to ‘prophets’ my entire life and have always been intrigued to listen to the voice of God through this ‘vessel’. However, I was always questioning certain prophets who spoke one way in church and yet their lives spoke totally different words.

I read Chapter 7 from this book which talks about covetousness. This word is one that always spoken in Christian circles, yet few truely understand its meaning.

According to Dictionary.com “Covetousness” is: inordinately or wrongly desirous of wealth or possessions; greedy. eagerly desirous. We see this exemplified in some of the following Bible passages: Col. 3:5; Eph. 5:5; Heb. 13:5; 1 Tim. 6:9, 10; Matt. 6:20

This word really got me thinking.

Though I don’t “think” I covet anything since I have never been one after ‘wealth or possessions’, however this world we live in seems to steer us in this way. I want the latest gadget, I want the latest car, why not get a bigger house, I need different jeans this season.. and so on.

Though I believe we should take care of ourselves and our family, when this takes over our contentment in living for Him and focused on Him, that’s when we take our eyes off of Him and covet our own desires.
